Description
The shipping supervisor position performs a variety of duties to support the Shipping & Logistics Department to ensure on-time shipments and customer satisfaction. The employee creates shipping documentation and bills-of-lading and arranges transportation schedules with carriers. This individual is also expected to make recommendations for process improvements and cost reduction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Create shipping documentation for domestic and international shipments and create pack lists.
- Dispatch inbound and outbound shipments using TMS and logistics providers.
- Work closely with the Production team to assure on-time shipping.
- Track shipments as requested in order to verify timely delivery by calling the shipping vendor or accessing the information via their website.
- Maintain shipment documentation, issue reports, and respond to customer inquiries regarding status of shipments.
- Prepare and follow up with freight claims.
- Post shipping information daily using the Company database.
- Provide freight rates to the Estimators and Inside Sales Representatives.
- Honor and track customers’ specific shipping requests (i.e. barcodes, plate cards, carrier preferences, tagging needs, etc.)
- Perform other duties as needed.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- The incumbent must sit, stand, and walk for extended periods of time.
- Incumbent must be able to read, see, hear, and speak English.
- Position requires frequent physical exertion. Incumbent will frequently be required to lift, push, pull, and carry up to 50 pounds, and larger amounts with assistance. Incumbent may need to operate crane and forklift.
- The work location includes a warehouse and fabrication shop setting, which will expose the Incumbent to dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, and loud noises.
- Incumbents must wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety glasses, ear protection and steel-toed boots, and any other PPE as required in the production area.
Qualifications / Education
- Minimum of a high school diploma or GED preferred.
- Minimum of one year’s experience in shipping for a steel service center.
- Experience with international shipping and customs requirements such as USMCA, AES, and commercial invoicing preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of shipping procedures and methods.
- Employment contingent on criminal background and drug test.
